Reaction Paper : Outreach Activity

by - January 31, 2015

These special children or people with disability have been mocked by different people even though they are fellow breathing living human. In the past, high ranks would order a child to be executed if he/she is not normal condition even though he/she is alive and breathing; hence, everyone is a normal human being, everyone living then has no disabilities. But there is a saying “we are perfect by our imperfections” it should mean that “nobody’s perfect but practice makes perfect”. We are all imperfect; does it mean we should execute ourselves too? No, we shouldn’t. In the eyes of the almighty God the Father, we are all perfect in His eyes; each of us has his/her own reasons why he/she is here.

On the 28th of January, year 2015 the whole senior batch contributed and went to the Sacred Heart where there are little children to adults that have each own different disabilities and mental illness. Some of them looked like normal people but when you actually talk to them; your patience is tested to its limits.

Even though you may think that you are the ones who are helping them, but actually they are the ones who are helping you.. it may even test your patience to its limits.”

During the program the students were advised to interact with the students of sacred heart and get their best friend of the day. I with my partner Angelica Ongsotto, thought of getting a child best friend because it will be easier and more fun but we couldn’t find an available patient since every kid was already handled and I even saw one kid that she directly went to a student and hugged her then sat on her lap.

Roaming around, almost to give up, surprisingly with the help of Ma’am MJ, greatly we found Patricia or as we call her Pat-pat. She has kind of disorder that she thinks she’s 18 (she’s actually 23 years old) and having problems with speaking. I encouraged Pat-pat to join even just one of the first two games that will be held in the program, but she hesitated and reason that “May mga lalaki eh.. ayaw ko..”. Instead of joining, Angelica, Ma’am MJ and I danced with her under the sun, cha-cha and tango together with the music played during the program games.
Until it was around quarter to eleven o’clock, the hosts, Ian Andrew Lazaro and Deen Wally De Jesus announced that is time to eat lunch. I consider Pat-pat intelligent in a way she knows the difference between a chicken joy and a mc chicken which are Jollibee Chicken and McDonald’s Chicken respectively.

Meanwhile, while eating lunch, she asked me to draw some things; like, horses, castles, a mansion, a prince and Pat-pat as a princess. I was incredibly happy that someone is really sincere grateful about my drawing even though it doesn’t look that great. After we ate, she asked me again not to draw but this time to write a “love letter” but actually it kind of looked like a bitter letter because as I write it for her, I read that she is breaking up with a certain guy named Mark and she even pointed out where Mark is. I thought deep inside my mind and remembered Christian Dela Cueva, my batchmate that is also a pinch of being a special child also did the same thing in the past, even though the girl and he weren’t even together. The same thing is to Pat-pat is that they weren’t even together and she is breaking up with Mark. Maybe this just symbolizes that both of them ends their feelings towards the other person, by doing this.

Around quarter to twelve-thirty, Pat-pat’s fetcher arrived and it is time for her to go even though the program didn’t end yet. I felt sorry for Pat-pat missing out the last program, which were Paper Dance and Dance Showdown. She would enjoy this part of the program but in this case she missed it. She would have danced on the center stage and I would be proud of her to have the courage to dance like that. Plus, of course to show off what Pat-pat and us practiced early the moment we met.

What I have learned in this experience is to enjoy every moment of it even though it is hard to communicate with each other the important is that we still had a good time with each other. The same as currently being a senior, I should write down and remember every bit of memory of happiness that I can think of because it is not just a couple of months away from graduation, its only couple of days left before everyone’s separated again and be in another and new environment. I should not enjoy every hour of it but enjoy every millisecond being with them, creating the last memories in highschool.
